Wulstan's Lodge Committee
We are a small, voluntary elected management committee made up of both parents and members of the local community who strive to ensure the smooth running of the nursery and make it a happy and safe place for the children who attend.
The committee is responsible for the overall management and smooth-running of the pre-school. This can mean anything from organising a fundraising event, helping to maintain our building, to negotiating with a landlord over the terms of a lease. The committee is the employer of staff in the pre-school so has overall responsibility for recruiting, training and developing staff, paying their salaries, and managing their contracts of employment.
The committee also has responsibility for things like developing a business plan, managing the daily accounts and, working with staff, ensuring the pre-school follows health and safety, risk assessment, insurance and first aid guidance and procedures.
Meetings are held each termly with an Annual General Meeting (AGM) being held in the Spring where elections are completed.
Thinking about getting involved?
There are lots of ways you can contribute to the committee and you can choose to give as much or as little time as you can spare. The good thing is you don't need any experience to make a difference.
A lot of the work committees do is fun – building new partnerships with other parents and professionals, coming up with new fundraising ideas, getting exciting plans off the ground but there are some regular jobs too. The three main roles on the committee are chair, treasurer and secretary. The tasks can be shared between different parents so all the work need not fall on any one person. The pre-school may have a budget for specific tasks to be done by paid professionals, for example the monthly accounts. However, overall responsibility for these areas rests with the committee.
Every year, as the children move on so do our parents. We are always happy to have new faces join the committee. However we do appreciate that sometimes parents simply want to help on an as-needed basis.
In addition, the Nursery is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance (PSLA). This Government organisation provides information and support as necessary, in order to guide us in policy creation. We can also access training courses, and other activities for staff and interested parents.
